Leigh Haigh became the new Club Criterium Champion today by winning the race overall in a sprint from a three-man break.

The race started in warm conditions with five Victoria riders heading the field. Steve May, Ludo, Conor Murphy, Vince Davison and Leigh Haigh were all at the front in the early part of the race with everyone trying to make breaks and trying to split the field. Haigh made a suicidal solo break from the off but was soon reeled in after a couple of laps freedom.

Vinnie, Ludo and Steve were all involved in the action in a number of unsuccessful breaks during the first half the race. With 25 minutes and five laps of racing remaining, a small break of four riders had broken free from the main pack and were dangling off the front by fifteen seconds. Haigh attacked up the inside through the finish to bridge the gap and started working with the break.

With fifteen minutes to go the break was down to four riders, and three laps later there were just three riders. With a healthy margin over the main field the three riders paced themselves to the bell lap. A Team Economic Energy rider attacked up Oxo Hill but was chased down with Haigh sitting on the wheels. With 150 meters to go Haigh opened up his sprint crossing the line with half a wheel advantage over the 2nd placed rider. The bunch wasn't idle either, with constant attacks coming from riders. Ludo launched a final solo attack on the final lap but was just passed on the line by Vinnie.

It was great to see three Victoria riders finishing in the top seven places!
